What does it mean to be a certified creativity coach?

What does creativity coaching entail? What does it mean to be a certified creativity coach? How can a coach help me with my own creativity? Many people ask these questions. To understand a bit more, ask yourself if you have ever thought your way of thinking was different from many of the people you know. Have you ever tried to get help from a life coach or a therapist but not been able to get them to focus on the creative work you yearn to do? Creativity coaching focuses on your creative drive, your creative projects, and your creative desires. It utilizes techniques designed for both individual coaching as well as creative project management. Coaching starts where you are and then analyzes thought patterns and working habits to help move you toward meaningful goals and new directions.  Creative project management helps with organizing support such as prioritizing, accountability, and manageable steps.

For creativity coaches, going through the process of becoming certified means spending years gaining knowledge, gathering insights and experience, and getting familiar with the vast literature on creativity. Not only that, but creativity coaches often have spent many years doing their own creative work and working in fields that utilize teaching and coaching techniques. When connecting with other creativity coaches during their training, they hone those skills to help you with your creativity.

Another question people often ask is what kind of creative people coaches work with. Creativity coaches do sometimes specialize in particular genres. Often this is due to their own creative work or the fact that they have developed specialized courses or offerings. However, creativity coaching is designed to work for any artist or anyone considering a project that is outside of their own comfort zone! Musicians, performing artists, writers, visual artists, and creative thinkers can all benefit.

The Creativity Coaching Association (CCA) developed a comprehensive certification program in 2005 to train coaches in the skills needed to serve the unique interests of creative thinkers from all walks of life.

Hundreds of coaches have gone through this unique training with an organization dedicated to enhancing and supporting the work of all kinds of artists and creatives.

The program consists of four different training courses, supervised one-on-one coaching sessions, peer coaching, and guided reading.

The Association offers a Creative Marketplace, a coach-finding service, a store, programs and more!

Anyone wanting to know more about creativity coaching will find that this organization is a rich source of information.  Some CCA goals include providing information about creativity coaching and creativity workshops to the general public, corporations and other organizations. The CCA also “promotes and publicizes the partnership between coaches and the lives of creative thinkers.”

According to the CCA, the membership-based community consists of hundreds of creativity coaches worldwide who are “dedicated to promoting creativity and creative work.” Anyone who works creatively, thinks creatively, or who wants to build a more creative life can reach out to a certified creativity coach.
