Using your Words

Creative Writing Advice

Some of my most favorite creativity exercises are the ones that play with words. Word webs on the Internet are great but it isn’t quite the same as having a project in front of you. So follow along and lets make a word web together -- this is almost like doing MadLibs! First, choose the name of a toy. Then, pick a random adjective and adverb. Combine the three into adv-adj-noun. Do it again with three more words, and then one last time. The goal of this exercise is not to have the word clumps make logical sense but to be able to dive into a description and allow it to take flight from there. Allow any and all images to arise. What do you see? a weirdly purple boxcar? What comes to mind? a corruptibly hungry game of Monopoly? (Ok, so I sort of cheated on that one…) Let your imagination take flight!
